Jewish Community Foundation College Scholarships
Scholarship Sponsored by Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Hartford
Below is the same information, organized and written in a clear, teacherly voice so you can quickly understand what the Foundation offers and what you need to do.
Purpose and overview
- The Foundation awards nearly $100,000 a year in college scholarships funded by generous donors. Each donor sets the rules for their fund, but all scholarships share the same goal: help students with strong potential—and limited financial resources—attend college or graduate school by contributing toward tuition, fees, room, and board.
Who is eligible
Before you start an application, check these basic requirements:
- Most funds require applicants to be Jewish. (See the note about Jewish identity below.)
- You must be accepted to or currently enrolled at an accredited institution of higher learning in the United States (or at an institution affiliated with a U.S. institution).
- You must be a current resident of the Greater Hartford, CT region.
- You must be a U.S. citizen.
Note about Jewish identity
- For funds that require Jewish identity: at least one parent must be Jewish and the applicant must identify as Jewish, or the applicant must have completed a formal conversion to Judaism.
Special scholarships with broader eligibility
- Anne E. Wall Scholarship: Open to all Bloomfield, CT residents, regardless of religious affiliation, based on demonstrated financial need.
- June Miller Rosenblatt Scholarship: Open to all Greater Hartford residents, regardless of religious affiliation, with demonstrated financial need and pursuing a major that leads to a career in education.
Other fund-specific criteria
- Some funds add unique requirements (for example, academic interest or community service). When you submit your application we will review it with those specific criteria in mind and match you to appropriate scholarships.
How to apply
- Complete only one application to be considered for all Foundation scholarships.
- Use the Foundation’s online college scholarship application form. If you have questions, email grants@jcfhartford.org.
- Incomplete applications may not be considered.
- Previous scholarship recipients are encouraged to apply again, but renewal is not guaranteed.
Confidentiality and review process
- All scholarship awards are confidential unless the recipient gives permission to share their name.
- The Scholarship Committee reviews applications anonymously and considers each candidate for all funds for which they qualify.
Awards and notification
- Typical awards range from $1,000 to $3,000.
- The committee usually notifies applicants of awards or denials in late June.
Expectations of recipients
- Recipients are expected to complete the year of study for which the scholarship was awarded (except in cases of health or other emergency). If a recipient does not complete the year without an approved reason, they must refund the amount paid on their behalf.
- Recipients should send acknowledgement letters to the donors who made their scholarship possible.
