Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois
Scholarship Sponsored by Golden Apple
Overview The Golden Apple Scholars Program (Illinois) prepares and supports future teachers who are committed to working in Illinois “schools-of-need.” It combines tuition assistance, classroom experience, mentoring, and professional development so Scholars are ready to step into challenging classrooms and stay effective over time. Application deadline: March 1, 2026.
Who should apply
- High school seniors (Class of 2026) who want to become teachers in Illinois.
- College freshmen and sophomores at participating Illinois partner universities.
- Illinois community college students planning to transfer and pursue a teaching career.
Why it matters (key benefits)
- Up to $23,000 total in financial assistance for college (includes paid professional development).
- Significant classroom teaching experience and first-rate instruction from award-winning teachers and partners.
- Academic and social‑emotional support, job placement help, and mentoring during the early years of your career.
How to apply (steps)
- Complete the online application, including references and personal statements. Start early—strong, specific statements and thoughtful references make a difference.
- Upload unofficial transcripts.
- Standardized test scores (ACT or SAT)
- Optional for most applicants: you may choose not to submit scores; the review committee will weigh course selection, GPA, grade trends, personal statements, and involvement.
- If you are accepted into the Scholars Program, you will be asked to submit scores after induction for research purposes.
- Home‑schooled applicants must submit test scores for application review.
- If invited, participate in a prospective Scholar interview.
Eligibility and selection
- Residency/citizenship: U.S. citizen, eligible non‑citizen, or DACAmented student and resident of Illinois.
- Entry points: Illinois high school senior (Class of 2026), freshman/sophomore at a partner university in Illinois, or an Illinois community college student.
- Holistic review: The committee looks at the whole application; no single item automatically decides admission. They consider academic record, course rigor, personal statements, recommendations, and extracurricular involvement.
Completion and post‑program commitments To complete the program and retain benefits you must:
- Meet ISAC program requirements.
- Maintain at least a 2.5 GPA.
- Participate in Golden Apple Scholar Institutes and other required programming.
- Follow the program code of conduct.
- Earn a bachelor’s degree from an Illinois Partner University.
- Obtain Illinois teaching certification.
- Teach for five years in an Illinois school‑of‑need within seven years of graduation.
- Note: Your anticipated college graduation date should be no earlier than summer 2028 because of program timing.
A quick piece of advice from a teacher If you’re serious about teaching in high‑need schools, apply—and take time on the personal statements and references. Mark the March 1, 2026 deadline on your calendar and gather transcripts and any required materials well before then.
If you want, I can help you: draft or edit a personal statement, choose which experiences to highlight, or make a checklist so you don’t miss the deadline.
