E. B. Miller Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Ohio Forestry Association, Inc.
Ohio Forestry Memorial Scholarship — explained
Here’s a clear, teacher-friendly summary of the scholarship and how it works.
What it is
- A scholarship program that provides financial help to students pursuing education in forest resources.
- Awards are given each year to at least one student; the exact number and amount depend on the fund’s investment returns.
Why this scholarship exists (origin)
- The initial gift that created the OFAF Scholarship Fund was made in memory of E. B. Miller, a third‑generation sawmill operator and longtime promoter of Ohio’s forest industry. Mr. Miller began logging with horses and worked at steam‑powered sawmills; over his career he owned and operated mills in all four corners of Ohio. He died in 1992.
- He supported forestry education (including helping develop the program at Hocking Technical College) and served as chairman of the OFA Paul Bunyan Show for more than a decade.
- The founders of the scholarship named the fund in his memory to encourage talented people to enter the forestry profession. They believed — and the scholarship continues to be based on the belief — that the industry needs highly qualified professionals to meet future challenges.
Purpose and allowable uses
- Purpose: to provide financial assistance toward a forest resource education for quality students.
- Award money may be used for tuition, room and board, laboratory fees, or other similar education costs.
Who is eligible
- Must be an Ohio resident and a U.S. citizen.
- Must be a high school graduate (or current college student) who has been accepted to an approved institution — university, college, junior college, or technical college — offering a forest resources program of at least two years. Current college students must show satisfactory scholastic progress.
How the grants work
- These awards are grants — there is no repayment requirement.
- Students can receive the scholarship for multiple years, but they must apply each year.
- At least one scholarship will be awarded annually; additional awards depend on available funds.
How recipients are chosen
- The Scholarship Committee of the Ohio Forestry Association Foundation selects the recipients.
- Preference is given to students attending Ohio colleges and universities.
A quick teacher’s note: if you’re interested in forestry studies and meet the residency and citizenship requirements, this is a worthwhile scholarship to pursue. Remember to reapply each year if you want continued support.
