What it is
- Each spring the University of Alabama chooses one incoming freshman to receive the Coca‑Cola First Generation Scholarship. The award is aimed at in‑state, first‑year students and is chosen through a competitive interview process during senior year.
- The scholarship can be renewed for up to four years as long as the recipient maintains a 3.0 GPA.
Who qualifies
To be considered, a student must:
- Be a first‑generation college student. (That means the student’s parents have completed no more than two years of post‑secondary education and do not hold a post‑secondary degree.)
- Be an Alabama resident.
- Have a high school GPA of at least 3.0.
- Demonstrate financial need.
How to apply (for high school seniors)
1. Complete the UA Scholarship Application by January 15. On that form, check the box indicating interest in first‑generation scholarship programs and answer the attached first‑generation essay questions.
2. File the FAFSA by March 1.
3. If selected to move forward, participate in an interview with the Selection Panel during the spring semester.
If you are chosen
Recipients are expected to:
- Enroll in the designated general studies course in the fall semester.
- Maintain at least a 3.0 GPA to keep the scholarship renewable.
- Participate in all required activities, programs, and service projects associated with the scholarship.
- Meet regularly with the First Generation Scholarships program manager.
