What it is
- Each spring the University of Alabama chooses one incoming freshman to receive the Coca‑Cola First Generation Scholarship. The award is aimed at in‑state, first‑year students and is chosen through a competitive interview process during senior year.
- The scholarship can be renewed for up to four years as long as the recipient maintains a 3.0 GPA.
Who qualifies To be considered, a student must:
- Be a first‑generation college student. (That means the student’s parents have completed no more than two years of post‑secondary education and do not hold a post‑secondary degree.)
- Be an Alabama resident.
- Have a high school GPA of at least 3.0.
- Demonstrate financial need.
How to apply (for high school seniors)
- Complete the UA Scholarship Application by January 15. On that form, check the box indicating interest in first‑generation scholarship programs and answer the attached first‑generation essay questions.
- File the FAFSA by March 1.
- If selected to move forward, participate in an interview with the Selection Panel during the spring semester.
If you are chosen Recipients are expected to:
- Enroll in the designated general studies course in the fall semester.
- Maintain at least a 3.0 GPA to keep the scholarship renewable.
- Participate in all required activities, programs, and service projects associated with the scholarship.
- Meet regularly with the First Generation Scholarships program manager.
