Ruth I. Michler Memorial Prize

The Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) annually bestows the Ruth I. Michler Memorial Prize to a woman who has recently ascended to the position of Associate Professor, or a similar role, in the field of mathematical sciences. This prestigious award offers the recipient a fellowship to spend a semester at Cornell University's Mathematics Department, free from teaching responsibilities. This opportunity is particularly beneficial for newly promoted Associate Professors, who often grapple with numerous challenges as they gear up to assume more significant leadership roles in research and their profession.

The Ruth I. Michler Memorial Prize is designed to recognize and support exceptional women at this pivotal stage in their careers, providing them with an opportunity to concentrate on their research within the intellectually stimulating environment of Cornell University's Mathematics Department.

Application Timeline: Applications are accepted from August 15 to October 1.

Application Process: Applications can be submitted via MathPrograms.org. To find the application form, click on "View Programs" located at the top right corner of the webpage. Scroll down to the programs listed under "Association for Women in Mathematics" and click "Apply" next to the Michler Prize.

Eligibility: The applicant must be a woman who has recently been promoted to Associate Professor or an equivalent position in the mathematical sciences at an institution other than Cornell University. Nominations are also welcome, and anyone can nominate a candidate for this award, regardless of their gender or AWM membership status.

Application Materials: The application packet should include:

• A Curriculum Vitae detailing career history, list of publications and invited addresses, and any other awards and support received.
• A proposal, approximately two to three pages long, outlining the research or book project to be undertaken during the fellowship period and explaining how a semester at Cornell University's Mathematics Department will benefit the applicant's project or research career. If the proposal includes plans for collaboration with a specific Cornell faculty member, a brief note from that faculty member confirming their willingness and availability to participate in the proposed research is required.
• Three recommendation letters highlighting the candidate's research strengths and accomplishments. These letters should be submitted online through MathPrograms.org.

All submitted materials will become the property of the AWM.

Prize Details

Selection Criteria: The Michler Prize is awarded based on the excellence of the candidate's research and the potential benefit to the applicant of a semester at Cornell University's Mathematics Department.

Nominee Requirements: Applicants must be women recently promoted to Associate Professor or an equivalent position in the mathematical sciences at an institution other than Cornell University. There are no restrictions on the applicant's nationality or the country in which she holds a position. The recipient is expected to spend a full semester at Cornell. Applications from underrepresented minorities are particularly encouraged.

Award Presentation: The recipient of the Michler Prize will receive a $50,000 award for a semester of mathematical research without teaching obligations at Cornell University's Mathematics Department. An additional housing/subsistence stipend of $3,000 will also be provided. Cornell will provide office space, library access, and computing facilities.
