Barowsky Scholars
Scholarship Sponsored by The Philanthropic Initiative
The Barowsky Scholars program supports students who want to become thoughtful leaders—people who listen carefully, facilitate productive civic conversations, negotiate across differences, and help build trust in their communities. Funded by the Andrew P. Barowsky Foundation and administered by The Philanthropic Initiative (TPI), the program awards a four-year renewable scholarship of up to $25,000, awarded based on financial need.
What the scholarship is looking for
- Students who are committed to reasoned, rational thinking and who can work respectfully with people who hold different views. The program values civic engagement and a willingness to put those collaboration skills into practice.
- A strong academic record in high school and clear motivation to succeed in college and contribute to community and society.
- Involvement across school, work, and community activities — a balanced set of commitments rather than a single focus.
Who is eligible
- U.S. citizens who are current residents of Maine.
- High school seniors or recent high school graduates.
- Students who will enroll full-time (first-year) in a four-year degree program at an accredited, not-for-profit college or university in the United States during the 2025–2026 academic year.
Academic/course requirements
- Before graduating college, scholars must complete one course in economics and two additional courses chosen from: accounting, finance, history, or psychology.
Campus residency requirement
- To receive and renew the scholarship, students must live on campus in housing paid directly to the university (for example, university-sponsored housing or student-group–organized housing billed through the university) and attend classes in person.
