Purpose and overview
Since 1989 the Howard Marcus Memorial Scholarship has honored two graduating seniors each year (one young man and one young woman) who have distinguished themselves through outstanding high school running careers. If you’re a dedicated runner thinking about continuing the sport in college, this is the scholarship to know.

Who Howard Marcus was
Howard Marcus was a tireless supporter of youth athletics in Santa Cruz County. He served for many years on the Wharf to Wharf Race organizing committee, coached basketball, practiced law, wrote, and — most importantly for local runners — founded the Star Track Club in 1983 (the predecessor to today’s Santa Cruz Track Club). He also helped make Santa Cruz County’s first all‑weather track a reality at Soquel High School in 1986. The scholarship carries his name to recognize his commitment to young athletes.

Scholarship terms (what the award provides)
- $4,000 per year, renewable for up to four years (maximum total $16,000 if renewed each year).
- Award funds are paid to the four‑year college or university of the recipient’s choice, on behalf of the student.
- Continued payment is contingent on the recipient being in good standing on the college’s interscholastic track or cross‑country team and intending to compete at the collegiate level.

Who may apply (eligibility)
Applicants must meet all of the following:
- Be a Santa Cruz County high school student.
- Have participated in a high school track & field or cross‑country program within Santa Cruz County.
- Hold a minimum high school GPA of 3.0.
- Plan to continue competing in track & field or cross‑country at a four‑year college or university.
