Summary
- The Robert H. Short Scholarship awards up to $7,500 per year (last-dollar-in) and can fund up to four years of college at a public or private nonprofit university. “Last-dollar-in” means the scholarship fills the remaining demonstrated financial need after other grants and scholarships are applied.
Who can apply
High school seniors who meet every item below are eligible to apply:
- Are residents of Cumberland County, NC.
- Will graduate in the spring after the application deadline from a Cumberland County high school, early college, or home school.
- Plan to enroll full time as a matriculated student at a nonprofit college or university (for‑profit institutions are not eligible) within six months of high school graduation.
- Have a weighted GPA of 3.5 or higher.
- Are eligible for a Pell Grant (you must upload your Student Aid Index from the FAFSA as proof).
- Submit a complete online application, including the Student Aid Index, required recommendations, and your high school transcript.
What the selection committee values
Applications are scored primarily on:
- Financial need
- Academic achievement
- Community service and/or work experience
Renewal rules (after the first year)
The award can be renewed for up to three additional years (for a total of up to four years) if you meet these conditions each year:
- Maintain full-time enrollment and good academic standing.
- Keep a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.
- Continue to demonstrate financial need.
- Submit the renewal request by the stated deadline.
